WHO WE ARE
For many communities on Prince of Wales Island, the ferry is the only dependable connection to essential services.
The Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA) provides safe, reliable, and efficient ferry service connecting Prince of Wales Island with Ketchikan and the surrounding region.
For over two decades, the IFA has served as a vital link for Southeast Alaska, supporting daily travel, local businesses, and tourism. Whether you’re a resident, a visitor, or traveling for work, our goal is simple: to make your journey dependable, comfortable, and seamless.
OUR HISTORY
The Inter-Island Ferry Authority was established in 1994 with a vision to strengthen connections between Prince of Wales Island and Ketchikan.
Service officially began in 2002 with the launch of the M/V Prince of Wales, creating a reliable, community-driven transportation system after the Alaska Marine Highway discontinued regular service to the island.
In 2006, the IFA expanded its fleet with the addition of the M/V Stikine, a sister vessel. The Stikine initially operated on a Northern Route serving Petersburg and Wrangell for three summer seasons before transitioning to the Southern Route.
Since then, the IFA has continued to evolve, guided by the needs of the communities it serves and supported by strong local partnerships.
TODAY
Today, the M/V Stikine operates as the primary vessel on the Southern Route, providing daily service between Hollis and Ketchikan. The approximately three-hour crossing remains a critical transportation link for residents, visitors, and businesses traveling to and from Prince of Wales Island.
In 2023, the Stikine received a major upgrade with the addition of a stern solarium, offering expanded seating and a more comfortable, scenic passenger experience.
The IFA continues to operate with the support of the M/V Prince of Wales, which provides backup service when needed.
WORKING TOGETHER
The IFA maintains a strong working relationship with the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) to help ensure consistent service across the region.
- The IFA provides coverage for the Metlakatla–Ketchikan route when the M/V Lituya is unavailable
- When needed, AMHS has supported IFA operations to maintain service on the Southern Route
This partnership helps ensure reliable marine transportation throughout Southeast Alaska, even during maintenance periods or unexpected service interruptions.
OUR COMMITMENT
As a community-owned public transportation system, the IFA is committed to:
- Providing safe and reliable service
- Supporting access to essential services
- Strengthening economic connections
- Serving the communities of Southeast Alaska
We’re proud to be part of daily life on Prince of Wales Island—and to continue serving the region for generations to come.
